Beinn Sgulaird
Beinn Sgulaird
A personal favourite of mine - This solitary Munro has much character
About this event
Beinn Sgulaird, located at the head of Loch Creran in Appin, is a solitary Munro and is well known for offering some of the finest summit views in the whole of Scotland. Perhaps the finest views are to the west towards the islands of Mull, Jura and beyond. With a sea-level start, and three distinct tops to negotiate, a reasonable amount of effort is needed to reap the rewards. Our route starts off fairly gradually on a track up through the glen, before striking off uphill more steeply on a grassy path. We will enjoy a leisurely pace, stopping frequently to look back behind us at the ever-improving views down the length of Loch Creran and out to Loch Linnhe. As height is gained, so the terrain becomes more rough and rocky, but never particularly difficult. Some care is needed as we cross areas of boulder field but never quite does our route become a scramble. A small amount of descent and re-ascent is needed as we pass over two intervening summits, including the Top of Meall Garbh, but for all your efforts, the rooftop summit views more than make up for it. The easiest route back down follows our route of ascent but, depending on group fitness and desires, and the weather conditions on the day, there are several options to make an enjoyable, albeit more lengthy circuit, including a route for anyone who is keen to practice some scrambling.
