Crianlarich 5
Crianlarich 5
Grab a fistful of Munros on this epic mountain day.
About this event
2 km south of Crianlarich and a short distance to the west of Ben More, lies a compact group of 5 Munros. These are An Caisteal (995m), Bein Chabhair (933m), Beinn a' Chroin 942m), Beinn Tulaichean (946m) and Cruach Ardrain (1046m). Despite their close proximity to one another, linking the five into a single manageable Munro bagging day is not straight forward. Typically, the group are tackled over 2 or even 3 separate days making use of a network of well worn 'baggers' paths. It is however, with some cunning navigation, and a good deal of rough, pathless terrain, possible to link them all together into one single, long circuit. This is a tough day with two big 'dips' in the route, each requiring a height loss of over 300m. Over half the day is spent away from any paths and we will encounter plenty of steep ground. Thankfully, your guide will take care of the navigation and your safety and help to manage a comfortable pace, leaving you enjoy the walk and the scenery. We will follow an anticlockwise route heading first to An Caisteal via the aptly named 'Twistin Hill'. From here we leave any signs of path behind as we plunge, in a generally south west direction towards the 600m bealach that separates An Caisteal from our second Munro, Beinn Chabhair. The 300m ascent to the summit, is steep and crags barr a 'dirrectismo' line to the cairn. Back to the bealach and more pathless going as we contour east in the general direction of Beinn a' Chroin and its multiple summits. We'll bag them all just in case of any future disparity with the Munro society's heighting surveys! On now towards Beinn Tulaichean, and yup, you guessed it, more pathless terrain. It will be 2 hours and some tricky navigation before we pick up a path again. Thankfully, now on a well trodden path we continue easily on from Beinn Tulaichean onto our fifth and final Munro of the day Cruach Ardrain. We descend down Grey Height to complete the circuit.
